This embroidered bag was created for a Fall 2018 course at The New School, entitled, “Enlightened Exchanges.” As a course project, Grace engaged with ideas of feminism, formalized spaces of the academy, and the weight of intellectual contributions from women thinkers across time. Grace took inspiration from a quote Anna Maria Van Schurman wrote in a letter to Dr. Rivet: “Woman has the same erect countenance as man, the same ideals, the same love of beauty, honour, truth, the same wish for self-development, the same longing after righteousness, and yet she is to be imprisoned in an empty soul of which the very windows are shuttered.” Using embroidery threads, Grace stitched together images and reinterpreted the quote to create this embroidered artwork.
